The room bill: the extras that slip away between breakfast and check-out

In short. Small extras (a digestif, a bottle, an extra breakfast, a transfer) are the money you lose most easily. Not through dishonesty: through haste. Keeping the room bill open during the stay, rather than rebuilding it at check-out, is the simplest way not to leave it on the table.

Saturday night, full dining room, the lady in room 3 asks "put it on the room?". Of course. Then Sunday morning comes, check-out, the rush, and nobody remembers that digestif. Multiply by a season and you see how much it weighs.

Why extras disappear

  • They get written on a slip that's then lost.
  • Whoever serves in the evening isn't whoever does the bill in the morning.
  • "I'll add it later" becomes "I forgot".
  • The guest is in a hurry and nobody wants to hold them up for two euros.

The rule that changes everything: an always-open bill

The trick isn't remembering better. It's not having to remember. Each room has a bill open from day one: as soon as a guest consumes something, you add it there, straight away, where you're serving. At check-out the bill is already done; you check it and take payment.

What goes on the room bill

  • bar and dinner items not included in the stay;
  • extra breakfasts or breakfasts for extra guests;
  • farm products (wine, oil, jam) taken away;
  • services: transfer, bike hire, laundry;
  • the tourist tax, always collected at check-out.

Three habits that make the difference

  1. Note it where you serve, not where you do the maths. The right moment is when you bring the digestif, not the next morning.
  2. One bill per room, not per person. Easier to close and to explain to the guest.
  3. Collect the tourist tax with the bill. As the person liable you pay it to the municipality anyway: better to have already taken it.

Where does Fattore come in?

With Fattore every room has its own open bill. Whoever serves in the evening adds the item from their phone, in seconds, and at check-out the total is already there, tourist tax included. No slips, no "who had what?". See the modules; the tourist tax register is covered in this article.

Frequently asked questions

Isn't a notebook enough?

It works while you're two people with few rooms. When rooms fill up and shifts change, the notebook is the first place extras get lost.

Don't guests mind seeing the bill grow?

On the contrary: a clear, up-to-date bill with no surprises at check-out is one of the things guests appreciate most.

How do I handle the tourist tax on the bill?

You add it to the room bill and collect it at check-out. That way it's already taken when you pay the municipality.
