Room cleaning: how to organise turnover days

Updated 12 October 2026

In short. On turnover days the problem isn't cleaning: it's the order you do it in. A clear list of who cleans what and in which order, updated as you go, avoids the forgotten room and the guest arriving while you're still making the bed.

Saturday. Three check-outs by 10, two check-ins from 15. In between, the rooms to turn around, the laundry, the shopping, and the phone ringing. Anyone running a property knows turnover day isn't a day like the others.

Why turnovers are the critical moment

  • the window is tight: a few hours between the last out and the first in;
  • you work with several people and tread on each other's toes;
  • a forgotten room is discovered when the guest is already at the door;
  • arrivals aren't all at the same time, and neither are departures.

The day's list, in order of arrival

The point isn't to clean everything at once, it's to clean in the right order. Whoever arrives first, room ready first. A day list with each room's status (to do, in progress, ready) shows at a glance where you are and what's missing.

  1. Note today's check-outs and when they vacate.
  2. Note the check-ins and when they arrive.
  3. Put the rooms needed first at the top.
  4. Update the status as you go: so anyone on site knows what's ready without asking.

Splitting the work without overlapping

  • Assign rooms, not "do the cleaning": everyone knows which are theirs.
  • Keep tasks separate: who makes beds, who does bathrooms, who does laundry.
  • A room is "ready" only after the final check.

Where does Fattore come in?

Fattore shows everyone, in real time, each room's status: to do, in progress, ready. Whoever cleans updates it from their phone; whoever is at reception sees where you are without going up to check. And when a guest arrives early, you instantly know if their room is ready. It's among the modules, next to shifts.

Frequently asked questions

How many people do turnovers need?

It depends on the rooms and the window between check-out and check-in. More than numbers, organisation matters: with a clear list even two people get a lot done.

How do I handle early arrivals?

With up-to-date room statuses you always know which rooms are ready, so you can let early arrivals into the right room.

Do I need an app or is paper enough?

Paper works if you're few and always the same people. When people and pace change, a shared real-time status removes the phone calls and the "where are you at?".
